Rob Reiners Son Nick Charged With First Degree Murder of Both Parents in Beverly Hills Home

I’ve been covering stories for thirty years now. This one hit different.

Nick Reiner, 46, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents – legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner – at their Beverly Hills residence. The Los Angeles County District Attorneys office announced the charges this morning.

Rob Reiner was 78. He directed some of the most beloved films in American cinema history. When Harry Met Sally. The Princess Bride. A Few Good Men. Stand By Me. This Is Spinal Tap. The man shaped how generations of people think about movies and storytelling.

And now his son is charged with killing him.

I dont have the full picture yet. Nobody does. The investigation is ongoing. What we know is that Beverly Hills police responded to the Reiner residence early Tuesday morning after a 911 call. Both Rob and Michele were found deceased. Nick was taken into custody at the scene.

Bail has been set at $4 million. His arraignment is scheduled for later this week.

Nick was Robs son from his first marriage to actress Penny Marshall. He had largely stayed out of the spotlight – no acting career no public profile. Just a private person who happened to have very famous parents.

The entertainment industry is in shock. Ive been fielding calls all morning from people who worked with Rob over the decades. Director Nora Ephron was supposed to make another film with him. Jason Alexander worked with him multiple times. Everyone is saying the same thing. They cant process it. They dont understand.

Neither do I honestly.

Its always strange when violence enters spaces we thought were safe. Beverly Hills. A filmmakers home. A family. The randomness of tragedy never stops being disorienting.

Rob Reiners final film – a documentary about democracy in America – was set to premiere at Sundance next month. Whether that screening will proceed is unclear.

What is clear is that one of Hollywoods most consistent voices is gone. And the circumstances are as horrific as anything he ever put on screen.

Im going to hold off on speculation. The courts will sort through what happened and why. But today were just sitting with the loss. Rob Reiner deserved better. So did Michele. So frankly does everyone involved in this tragedy.
