Don’t Look Up: Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothee Chalamet and More Celebs to be a Part of Netflix Comedy

Film production clapperboard

Netflix just announced a cast that made me audibly gasp in my living room and I am not exaggerating.

Adam McKay’s upcoming comedy Don’t Look Up has assembled what might be the most stacked ensemble since Ocean’s Eleven. We’re talking Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Timothée Chalamet, Jonah Hill, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, and Matthew Perry. All in one movie. WHAT.

The film follows two low-level astronomers who discover a comet is heading straight for Earth and then have to go on a media tour to warn everyone. Which… given how 2020 has gone with people refusing to believe scientists about literally anything, this feels painfully relevant.

McKay wrote and is directing the project. You know him from The Big Short (Oscar winner), Vice (eight nominations), Anchorman, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights. The man knows how to make you laugh while also making you deeply uncomfortable about the state of the world.

Variety reports that Lawrence and DiCaprio are expected to play the two astronomers, though Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed. DiCaprio reportedly took months to decide on the project while also prepping for Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

The supporting cast is genuinely insane. Blanchett and Rob Morgan were already announced. Then Netflix added Streep (who’s been killing it on streaming lately), Jonah Hill (reuniting with his Superbad energy maybe?), Himesh Patel from Yesterday, and Tomer Sisley.

Oh and Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi are in this too because apparently we’re just putting everyone in movies now. Matthew Perry being in anything is noteworthy since he’s basically been invisible since Friends ended.

McKay told Deadline the film is basically about climate change denial and media’s failure to communicate existential threats. “The fact that Netflix sees this movie as a worldwide comedy sets the bar high for me and my team,” he said.

Filming is supposed to start before the end of the year which, given COVID protocols, is ambitious. But with this cast? They better figure it out. I need this movie like I need air.

No release date announced yet but expect it sometime in 2021. Start preparing your Oscar pools now.
