Chris Evans Lied to All of Us and Now Hes Back as Captain America With a Baby

Movie theater seats

Remember when Chris Evans told Esquire earlier this year he was “happily retired” from Marvel? Remember when he flat out denied returning for Avengers Doomsday? Yeah well about that.

The man lied. And honestly? Good for him.

The Teaser Dropped and Everyone Lost It

Marvel finally released the first Avengers: Doomsday teaser online today after it played in theaters with Avatar: Fire and Ash last week. And yep Steve Rogers is back. With a motorcycle. And a house. And… a baby?

Variety confirms the teaser shows Steve rolling up to what looks like the same house from his Endgame ending with Peggy Carter. He pulls out his old Cap suit, looks at it all nostalgic, then were shown him holding a newborn. The whole thing ends with “Steve Rogers will return for Avengers: Doomsday.”

Not Captain America. Steve Rogers. That wording matters.

The Russo Brothers Are Back to Wreck Us

Joe and Anthony Russo posted on Instagram: “The character that changed our lives. The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this…”

These are the guys who directed Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame. The last one made $2.8 billion and became the second highest grossing movie ever. So yeah they know what theyre doing.

December 18, 2026 is the release date. A whole year from now. Deadline reports more character-focused teasers are coming including one for Thor.

But Wait What About Anthony Mackies Cap?

This is where it gets tricky. Mackie just became Captain America in Brave New World. Hes supposed to be the new shield guy. And now the old shield guy is back with apparently a whole new storyline involving fatherhood?

Gizmodo points out that in comics both Caps have worked together before so theres precedent. But still feels a little messy doesn’t it.

Some fans are theorizing multiverse shenanigans. Others think this ties into Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr. baby!) somehow causing an incursion by Steve going back in time. ComicBook.com breaks down why saying “Steve Rogers” instead of “Captain America” probably signals he won’t take back the mantle officially.

Marvel is Desperate and Its Working

Look we can analyze this twelve different ways but the bottom line is Marvel needed a win. Phase 4 and 5 have been rough. Newer characters havent connected the way Tony and Steve did. So theyre bringing back the heavy hitters.

Is it nostalgia bait? Absolutely. Does that make it bad? Not necessarily.

Evans hadnt suited up since 2019 outside that hilarious Human Torch cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine last year. Six years is a long time. Seeing him hold that shield again – even just looking at it in a box – hits different than any of the newer stuff.

Doomsday is coming and apparently so is Dad Steve Rogers.
