Russias Yandex Pauses Autonomous Vehicle Testing in the US

Yandex the Russian tech giant sometimes called “Russias Google” has paused its autonomous vehicle testing in the United States. The timing is… well its not exactly mysterious is it.

Self-driving car technology

With sanctions hitting Russian companies from every direction and the geopolitical situation being what it is Yandex apparently decided that continuing to operate self-driving cars on American roads wasnt the best look. Smart call honestly. The optics would have been terrible.

The company had been testing autonomous vehicles in Ann Arbor Michigan – a college town with good roads and relatively predictable driving patterns. Perfect for developing self-driving technology. Less perfect when your parent company is headquartered in a country invading its neighbour.

Yandex Self-Driving Group had made real progress in the autonomous space. Their technology was considered competitive with American companies like Waymo and Cruise. This pause represents a significant setback for their US ambitions.

The broader tech decoupling between Russia and the West is accelerating rapidly. When economic sanctions started cascading, companies like Yandex were always going to be affected. They rely on Western markets, Western talent, Western partnerships. All of that is now complicated at best.

Whether this pause becomes permanent depends on factors way beyond autonomous vehicles – namely whether the war ends and relations normalize. Given current trajectories thats not happening anytime soon.

For the American autonomous vehicle industry this changes the competitive landscape slightly. One less player testing on US roads. Though frankly Yandex was never going to be allowed to deploy commercial services here anyway – national security concerns alone would have blocked that.

The future of autonomous vehicles is still coming. Just apparently without Russian companies being part of the American testing scene. Add it to the list of things 2022 has broken.
