Red Soxs Finalized Coaching Staff Includes Jason Varitek Will Venable

The Red Sox finalized their coaching staff and the names include Jason Varitek as game planning coordinator. Will Venable is also on board as bench coach.
Varitek is a Red Sox legend so having him in the coaching ranks makes sense from both a baseball and marketing perspective. The fans love him. Whether that translates to good coaching is a different question but his baseball IQ was never in doubt as a player.
MLB.com detailed the full coaching staff lineup.
Venable brings a different background having played for multiple teams and coached in the Dodgers system. Diversity of experience in a coaching staff usually helps cover blind spots.
Baseball organizations that develop coaching talent internally tend to maintain competitive advantages over time.
The manager relies heavily on his staff for preparation and in-game adjustments. Getting the right mix of personalities and expertise is harder than fans realize.
Varitek specifically will work on game planning which uses his strengths as a former catcher. Catchers see the game differently and that perspective is valuable in the dugout.
The Red Sox are hoping this staff can maximize the talent on the roster. Coaching only matters so much but it matters enough that teams spend millions finding the right people.
Staff finalized November 2021
