The Traverse City Pit Spitters walked off on opening day against the Kokomo Jackrabbits. You cant script a better start to the season.

The Northwoods League game came down to the final at bat with the Pit Spitters delivering. Home crowd went crazy. Players mobbed the hero at home plate. Classic baseball stuff.

Record-Eagle covered the game and the celebration that followed.

Summer collegiate baseball is a vibe unto itself. Small towns packed with prospects trying to get noticed. The atmosphere is intimate in ways that professional baseball cant replicate.

Baseball culture lives in these smaller leagues as much as it does in the majors. Maybe more honestly.

The Pit Spitters have built a loyal following in Traverse City. Opening day is basically a holiday. The walk off just made it better.

Walk off wins are special because they end immediately. No half inning of defense to potentially blow it. The moment of victory is the final moment of the game.

For the Kokomo Jackrabbits its a tough loss to start the road trip. But baseball has 60+ games in summer ball. One loss wont define anything.

Game played June 2021
