Bipartisan Lawmakers Push for White House Cybersecurity Czar

cybersecurity white house government policy

Lawmakers from both parties are pushing for a dedicated cybersecurity czar in the White House. After SolarWinds and Colonial Pipeline the need seems obvious.

The proposal would create a national cyber director position with real authority to coordinate federal cybersecurity efforts. Currently responsibility is scattered across agencies.

Cyberscoop reported on the bipartisan effort and the specific legislation involved.

Bipartisan agreement on anything in Washington is notable. Cybersecurity is one of the few areas where both parties recognize the threat is real and growing.

Technology policy often moves slowly in government while threats evolve quickly. A czar with authority could help bridge that gap.

The position would report directly to the president and coordinate across DHS NSA FBI and other agencies. Bureaucratic turf battles have hindered cyber response before.

Critics worry another layer of bureaucracy wont help. Supporters say unified leadership is exactly whats missing.

Whether the legislation passes depends on whether the urgency from recent attacks translates into actual political will. Washington has short memory sometimes.
