ME Police Chief Busted for Using Fake Report to Get Out of Meeting
A Maine police chief has resigned after getting caught using a fake police report to skip a meeting. And honestly I have so many questions starting with: how bad was this meeting that you committed fraud to avoid it?
The chief of the Madison Police Department allegedly fabricated a report claiming there was an emergency that required his attention. There was no emergency. He just didnt want to go to the meeting. Which look I get it. Meetings are often terrible. But making up fake crimes to get out of them is a bridge too far my guy.
According to local news reports the deception was discovered when someone actually looked into the supposed incident and found… nothing. No call to dispatch. No record of any emergency. Just a police chief who apparently couldnt think of a better excuse.
The town manager confirmed the resignation and said they were “disappointed” which is bureaucratic speak for absolutely furious. When the person in charge of enforcing laws decides to break them for something this petty it raises questions about everything else theyd been doing.
Small town police departments in Maine dont exactly make national news often but when they do its usually something wild. This qualifies. The Madison Police Department serves a town of about 4800 people. Everybody knows everybody. The chief filing a fake report was gonna get caught eventually.
There might be additional consequences beyond the resignation. Filing a false police report is itself a crime in most jurisdictions. Whether prosecutors pursue charges remains to be seen. They might just want this to go away quietly.
For the residents of Madison this is probably embarrassing and frustrating. You want to trust that your police chief is honest. When that trust is broken over something as mundane as skipping a meeting it makes you wonder what else might be going on.
Anyway thats the story. Police chief fakes emergency to skip meeting. Gets caught. Resigns. And somewhere a town meeting proceeded without him just like it would have anyway.
