The Passion of the Christ 2 Talks Are Happening Confirms Screenwriter Exclusive

After years of speculation and rumor the screenwriter behind The Passion of the Christ has confirmed that yes, discussions about a sequel are actively happening.

The original film directed by Mel Gibson in 2004 became one of the highest-grossing R-rated films in history earning over $600 million worldwide. It was also one of the most controversial films of the decade with its graphic depiction of Jesus Christs final hours drawing both passionate devotion and fierce criticism.

A sequel has been discussed on and off for nearly two decades now. Gibson himself has mentioned it in interviews occasionally, usually in vague terms that left everyone guessing whether it would actually happen. The reported title – The Resurrection – would obviously focus on the events following the crucifixion.

The screenwriter speaking exclusively to media this week confirmed that the creative team has met multiple times in recent months to discuss the project seriously. “These arent just casual conversations anymore,” they said. “Theres real momentum.”

Whether Mel Gibson would return to direct remains unclear. His personal controversies over the years have made him a complicated figure in Hollywood. Some studios might be hesitant to work with him. Others might see the box office potential as worth the risk.

Jim Caviezel who played Jesus in the original has indicated hes interested in returning. Hes aged obviously but so has everyone – and a resurrection story wouldnt necessarily require him to look exactly as he did twenty years ago.

The faith-based film market has evolved significantly since 2004. Movies targeting Christian audiences have become a reliable revenue stream. A Passion sequel with the right marketing could potentially match or exceed the originals performance.

For now its still in the discussion phase. But those discussions are apparently very real and very active. Watch this space.
