Keyshawn Johnson Explains Why Jets Should Avoid Trevor Lawrence in NFL Draft
![]()
Okay so Keyshawn Johnson went on his ESPN radio show and dropped one of the coldest takes Ive heard in a minute. The former Jets receiver says Gang Green should pass on Trevor Lawrence even if they get the number one pick.
His reasoning? Your team sucks.
No seriously thats basically what he said. “I think hes a great quarterback but if youre the New York Jets you have bigger holes than Trevor Lawrence at quarterback. Your team sucks. Its the worst thing going.”
And honestly? I get where hes coming from even if I think hes wrong.
His argument is that the Jets already drafted their franchise quarterback in Sam Darnold with the third pick three years ago. Darnold has nothing around him. Zero weapons. A coaching staff that nobody can figure out how they got hired. Why would putting another rookie quarterback in that same situation produce different results?
Keyshawn wants them to trade the pick. Do what the Celtics did in basketball and stockpile assets. Build an actual team around Darnold first.
“Is there any Marvin Harrison on the New York Jets?” he asked. Good point. When Peyton Manning got drafted Indianapolis had Hall of Famers around him. The Jets have… checks notes… not that.
The problem with this logic is that quarterback is the most important position in football and Lawrence is considered a generational prospect. You dont pass on that to build around a guy whos looked progressively worse each season.
Also conveniently Keyshawn forgets that his own rookie year with the Jets in 1996 they went 1-15. He wrote a whole book called “Just Give Me The Damn Ball” about how bad that team was. Now hes lecturing about patience and team building?
The irony is thick.
Look the Jets will probably screw this up somehow because theyre the Jets. But if Lawrence is available and they dont take him thats franchise malpractice. Build around the new guy instead.
