2 Rottweilers Used Jogger Like a Chew Toy in St. Charles Attack Before CCL Holder Fatally Shot 1 Dog

I’ve covered a lot of stories in my career but this one from St. Charles Township in Illinois is something else. A 51-year-old woman was out for a morning jog when two Rottweilers attacked her so viciously that Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain said they used her like a chew toy.
The attack happened around 9:15 AM on December 13th on Windsor Drive. According to the sheriffs office the woman had stopped to help return a friendly Labradoodle that had run out to greet her in the street. She was walking the dog back up the driveway to the homeowner when two Rottweilers came bounding out of the house and began attacking her.
The homeowner tried desperately to pull the dogs off the jogger. A man driving by saw the commotion and stopped to help. But even with two people trying to intervene the dogs wouldnt let go. The passerby had a concealed carry license but wasnt armed at the moment.
So he called his father who lived about a block away and asked him to bring his gun.
Let that sink in. While a woman is being mauled by two massive dogs this guy has to wait for his dad to drive over with a firearm. Minutes felt like hours I’m sure. The attack continued the whole time.
Once the man got his weapon he shot one of the Rottweilers at point-blank range. Sheriff Hain explained that the man was very tactical about it – if he had tried to shoot from a distance or aimed for the dogs head he would have hit the victim. The single gunshot caused both dogs to retreat. The wounded dog died shortly after.
The 51-year-old woman was rushed to Delnor Hospital and then airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospitals trauma center where she underwent emergency surgery. Her injuries were severe but not life-threatening. The homeowner who owned all three dogs also sustained injuries trying to stop the attack and was treated at Delnor.
The day after the incident the dog owner voluntarily had the second Rottweiler euthanized. It was a proactive stance by the dog owner and I would say any responsible dog owner would do the same, Hain said.
The concealed carry holder wont face any charges. This is a cut-and-dry case of self-defense, said David Lombardo who runs a concealed carry instruction school in the area. Its just not the scenario people usually think of when getting a gun for protection. But as sad as it is to have to kill a dog when the choice is between a human life and a dogs life the human wins.
He probably saved her life, Lombardo added.
The victim Laura Kizman has since filed a lawsuit against the dogs owners Steven and Ann Dorando. According to court documents she suffered severe wounds to both legs her arm and head. Her attorney Timothy Cavanagh said the attack would not have happened if the Dorandos had been responsible dog owners.
In March 2022 the Kane County Board honored Chris Shanahan – the man who intervened and shot the attacking dog – for his heroism. Not every day you see someone recognized for shooting a dog but the circumstances here were exceptional.
People get hurt in all kinds of ways in this country but being used like a chew toy while jogging through a suburban neighborhood isnt something anyone should have to worry about.
