Apart from The Undertaker‘s final farewell, Drew McIntyre taking on Roman Reigns is the most anticipated match at Survivor Series. Although Randy Orton was expected to go up against Reigns, McIntyre won back the WWE Championship on RAW last Monday.
Before Monday, Reigns belittled McIntyre on SmackDown about how the Scottish Psychopath lacked a title to appear on Survivor Series. It seems to prove Reigns wrong; McIntyre won the title.
In the latest interview with Sports Illustrated, McIntyre revealed what is going on in his mind as he goes into the PPV’s main event. While he knows Reigns is doing immensely well in his heel stature. With Paul Heyman by his side, Reigns is the Top Heel of WWE. However, McIntyre wants to prove him otherwise.
“Roman is fully embracing his character, without restrictions, and he’s gone to another level,” said McIntyre. “He’s got Paul Heyman by his side, and he’s genuinely so compelling. This is the ultimate opportunity, in the ring with him, to prove I am the top guy in WWE.”
McIntyre praised Reigns for his in-ring expertise and argued how he is on the top for a reason, therefore, McIntyre is doing everything he can to replace Reigns as the top guy of the company.
Roman Reigns and Drew McIntyre have come a long way since 2019
However, it would not be the first time the duo would be facing each other. Back in 2019, both Superstars were involved in a brief feud. The feud saw McIntyre getting defeated at WrestleMania 35.
The WWE Champion looked back at the match and said, “That was Roman’s moment, returning from illness and showing the world he was back.” He is referring to Reigns’ Leukemia diagnosis that led him to take a two years long remission.
“I was thankful for that opportunity, but it needed to be all about Roman. This is way different than 35. He’s done a lot since then, but I have risen up the card, too. I have a lot to prove to him this Sunday,” concluded McIntyre. During that time, he also returned to the main roster.
WWE released McIntyre in 2014. Then, he went on to fight in various promotions all over the world, including rival TNA. Then, he returned to WWE in 2017 and became the NXT Champion. He moved to the main roster in 2018 and witnessed a meteoric rise.
As he goes into the main event on Sunday, McIntyre knows, “All eyes are always on Roman, but this is my opportunity to prove I’m better.” No matter who wins, the match will definitely be a must-watch for the wrestling fans.
