Report: New Nintendo Switch model with bigger OLED screen, 4K output planned

Bloomberg published a report Wednesday with new details on the long-rumored new, more powerful Nintendo Switch model, dubbed the Nintendo Switch Pro by fans and players. The outlet first reported on the upgraded model of the Nintendo Switch in 2020, though reports have circulated for years.

According to the report, Samsung will soon begin production on “7-inch, 720p-resolution OLED panels” for the device. The new Nintendo Switch model will also ship with “4K ultra-high definition graphics when paired with TVs,” Bloomberg sources said. Nintendo and Samsung declined to comment on Bloomberg’s report.

Nintendo has repeatedly denied existence of the so-called Nintendo Switch Pro. Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser told Report Door in December that the company is “always looking” at how Nintendo can “improve the gameplay experience,” whether on the “current platform” or a “future platform.” Bowser also told Report Door that the Nintendo Switch is at the “midpoint of this life cycle

In February, during a financial earnings call, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said Nintendo would not be announcing an upgraded Nintendo Switch model “anytime soon.”

But Nintendo’s history includes plenty of upgraded models of existing platforms — like the New Nintendo 3DS XL. The company also has a bunch of games coming to its platform this year, many of which were announced during a February Nintendo Direct. Though there wasn’t an update on Nintendo’s upcoming Breath of the Wild sequel, there are a lot of games on the way.
