Google Maps for iOS will now allow sharing real-time updates with others

Google Maps for the iPhone is about to get even better.

Google added Google Maps support for CarPlay as part of iOS 12 not long ago. Now the search giant is once again giving iPhone users another fine update. It is the ability to share your travel status with other people, that too real-time.

This feature was already available on Android since 2017. This new feature brings Google Maps in line with Waze which is also owned by Google, and even Uber and Lyft.¬† All of these allow iPhone users to give updates to let others track their routes. One can send the link through Apple’s Messenger app, WhatsApp,¬†Facebook Messenger or a number of other third-party messaging apps that are installed on the iPhone.

Once the link is sent, your friends will be able to follow you on your trip. They would be able to see where you currently are and when you are expected to arrive at the destination.

Google said that once you get to the destination, the sharing feature will automatically end.

Users can share their cycling, driving and walking progress but would not be able to send the trip progress if they are using public transportation, similar to the Android version.

The new update is available from the Apple App Store.
