Chargers ‘superstar’ QB Justin Herbert in top form during wild win vs. Browns

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – As the Los Angeles Chargers and Cleveland Browns zipped up and down the field during the fourth quarter Sunday, perhaps the only other person working at top speed at SoFi Stadium was the scoreboard operator.

Six touchdowns.

Forty-one points.

All in the fourth quarter.

What’s just as important to note: The Chargers accounted for four of those touchdowns and 26 points while beating the Browns, 47-42, and improving to 4-1.

“It was unreal,’’ Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert said.

It was Herbert in top form that quarter, as well. The second-year quarterback threw for two touchdowns – a 42-yarder to Mike Williams and a 19-yarder to Austin Ekeler – while completing 12-of-18 passes for 208 yards.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert eludes Browns defensive tackle Jordan Elliott on Sunday.

“To win a game like this that turns into a track meet, you have to have a superstar quarterback to win it, and that’s what he is,’’ Chargers head coach Brandon Staley said. “He was fantastic in the game.’’

Had Staley ever been part of a fourth quarter as wild as what unfolded on Sunday? “Yes, yes, but it doesn’t make it any less stressful,’’ he said.

Staley seemed to embrace the stress, going for it on fourth down four times and watching his team convert all four times.

One of those moments came with the Chargers trailing 35-28 and facing a fourth-and-4 on their own 41. Herbert threw deep for Mike Williams, who drew pass interference on the Browns in what turned into a 33-yard gain. Six plays later, the Chargers scored a touchdown on Ekeler’s 4-yard run and caught Cleveland at 35-35.

When the shootout ended, the Chargers’ star receiver, Williams, revealed what was being said in the huddle.

“Score,’’ he said. “That was the main thing.’’
